Volunteering With Moreways Healthcare

Volunteering with Moreways Healthcare can be a rewarding way to contribute your time, skills and experience while supporting adults to take part in meaningful activities, build confidence and remain connected with their communities.

Our volunteers complement the work of employed colleagues. They do not replace paid staff, undertake unsupervised support responsibilities or carry out tasks for which they have not been trained and authorised.

Volunteering opportunities depend on the needs of our services, the interests and suitability of the applicant and our ability to provide appropriate supervision. Because the people we support may have complex needs, every opportunity must be planned carefully and introduced safely.

Give Your Time. Share Your Skills.

Make A Positive Contribution

Whether you can offer a few hours regularly or support a particular project, volunteering can help create new opportunities, strengthen community connections and enrich the experiences of the people we support.

Share Your Interests

Use your interests, experience or practical skills to support suitable activities and community-based opportunities.

Build Experience

Develop communication, teamwork and community-support experience within a structured and professionally supervised environment.

Support Inclusion

Help people build social connections, access ordinary community opportunities and take part in activities that matter to them.

Why Volunteer With Us?

Volunteers can bring additional interests, perspectives and community connections into our services. A volunteer may introduce an activity, help someone practise a skill, support a group project or simply provide positive social contact within the boundaries of an agreed role.

Volunteering can also benefit the individual volunteer. It may provide experience of the supported living sector, opportunities to develop transferable skills and a greater understanding of person-centred support, safeguarding and professional boundaries.

We aim to make each volunteering arrangement purposeful. Before a placement begins, we consider what the volunteer can offer, what they hope to gain and whether the opportunity can be managed safely and consistently.

A Supported Volunteering Experience

Every volunteer has a named contact or supervisor who provides guidance, explains the agreed role and remains available when support is required.

Volunteers receive an appropriate introduction to Moreways Healthcare, the service in which they will volunteer and the standards expected of them. The content of induction and training will depend on the nature of the role.

Volunteers are not expected to manage difficult situations alone. A member of the employed team will remain responsible for service delivery, safeguarding decisions, medication, risk management and all duties that require trained or authorised staff.

Questions and concerns should always be raised promptly with the supervising member of staff or service manager.

Possible Volunteering Opportunities

The opportunities available will vary between services and may change according to the preferences, assessed needs and interests of the people we support.

Examples may include helping with suitable social, creative, practical or community activities. Any activity must be agreed in advance and remain within the volunteer’s role description.

Activities And Interests

Support suitable arts, crafts, games, music, reading, gardening, cooking or other shared-interest activities.

Community Participation

Assist with planned community groups, events or activities where this has been agreed and appropriately supervised.

Practical Skills

Share suitable skills such as basic digital confidence, creative projects, gardening or other agreed interests.

Social Connection

Offer positive, respectful social contact through conversation, shared activities and planned group engagement.

Events And Projects

Contribute to suitable one-off events, seasonal activities, awareness projects or community initiatives.

Administrative Support

Some opportunities may involve appropriate non-confidential administrative or organisational tasks within central teams.

What Volunteers Do Not Do

Volunteers complement our workforce but do not replace employed support workers. They must not be used to fill staffing gaps or perform duties that require an employee, regulated professional or specifically trained member of staff.

A volunteer will not normally be expected to:

  • Work alone with responsibility for a service or shift
  • Administer or manage medication
  • Provide personal care
  • Handle service-user money unless specifically authorised under an appropriate process
  • Access confidential records without a legitimate and agreed reason
  • Make safeguarding, clinical or risk-management decisions
  • Transport people in a private vehicle unless formally agreed and properly authorised
  • Carry out physical intervention or respond independently to high-risk incidents
  • Undertake tasks outside the agreed volunteer role description

Informal Support

A staff member will be available during volunteering activity to provide guidance and help address immediate questions or concerns.

Volunteers are encouraged to ask questions rather than make assumptions. Where an issue relates to safety, safeguarding, confidentiality or professional conduct, it should be reported immediately.

Informal conversations can also help volunteers reflect on activities, receive feedback and prepare for future sessions.

Formal Review

Volunteers will have planned opportunities to discuss how the placement is progressing, whether the role remains suitable and whether any additional guidance is required.

The frequency of review will reflect the volunteering arrangement, the level of responsibility and the needs of the service.

Reviews may consider attendance, boundaries, learning, feedback, role satisfaction and any changes required to the volunteer agreement.

Induction, Training And Guidance

Before beginning a placement, volunteers receive information relevant to their role and the setting in which they will volunteer. This helps establish clear expectations and supports safe participation.

The level of induction will be proportionate to the activity. It may include safeguarding, confidentiality, equality and diversity, health and safety, professional boundaries, incident reporting and the procedures for raising concerns.

Additional learning may be offered where it is necessary for the agreed role. Access to training does not authorise a volunteer to perform staff duties or undertake responsibilities outside their written role description.

Respect

Treat people as individuals and protect their dignity, privacy and choices.

Reliability

Attend agreed sessions and provide reasonable notice when unable to attend.

Boundaries

Remain within the agreed role and avoid inappropriate personal relationships or promises.

Confidentiality

Protect personal information and share concerns only through appropriate channels.

Safer Recruitment And Checks

Because volunteers may have contact with adults who receive support, applicants should expect an appropriate selection and checking process.

The checks required will depend on the nature of the role. They may include an application form, informal discussion or interview, identity verification, references, right-to-volunteer confirmation and a Disclosure and Barring Service check where the role is eligible and requires one.

Providing an application does not guarantee that a volunteering opportunity will be offered. We must consider the applicant’s suitability, available opportunities, service needs, supervision capacity and the safety and preferences of the people we support.

Safeguarding And Speaking Up

Volunteers must report any concern about abuse, neglect, exploitation, unsafe practice or inappropriate conduct immediately. Volunteers should not investigate concerns themselves or promise to keep safeguarding information secret.

A concern can be raised with the supervising member of staff, service manager, safeguarding contact or another appropriate senior manager. Where someone is in immediate danger, emergency services should be contacted.

The Volunteering Process

We use a straightforward process to understand your interests, identify whether a suitable opportunity exists and ensure the proposed arrangement can be managed safely.

01

Enquire

Tell us about your interests, availability and the type of contribution you would like to make.

02

Discuss

We discuss your suitability, expectations and whether an appropriate opportunity is available.

03

Complete Checks

Where appropriate, we complete the identity, reference and safeguarding checks required for the role.

04

Begin Safely

You receive an agreed role description, induction, named contact and clear boundaries before starting.

Expenses, Employment And Expectations

Volunteering is unpaid and does not create an employment relationship or guarantee future paid work with Moreways Healthcare.

Reasonable, pre-agreed expenses may be reimbursed where this forms part of the volunteering arrangement and appropriate evidence is provided. Volunteers should not incur costs on behalf of Moreways Healthcare without prior approval.

Both the volunteer and Moreways Healthcare may bring the arrangement to an end. Wherever possible, concerns should first be discussed so that misunderstandings or practical difficulties can be addressed.

Who Can Apply?

We welcome interest from people with a range of backgrounds, skills and experiences. Suitability will depend on the opportunity and the requirements of the service.

Applicants should be reliable, respectful, able to follow guidance and willing to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.

Availability Of Roles

Not every service will have an available volunteer placement. Opportunities depend on current needs, the preferences of the people we support and the capacity of staff to provide supervision.

We may retain your details for consideration where an immediate suitable opportunity is unavailable, subject to your consent and our privacy arrangements.
