Choosing a supported living home

This guide helps you compare living arrangements and prepare questions before deciding. For an overview of the support we offer, visit our supported living services page.

Supported living offers an alternative to residential care and empowers you to choose the right amount of support – how and when you need it – so you can lead an enriching and fulfilling life.

Our supported living schemes are designed for people with learning disabilities, autism, brain injuries or complex care needs. If you’re looking for supported living whilst living an independent life, you’ve come to the right place. We are passionate about delivering the best possible care and support.

What is supported living?

Supported living allows you to live independently and have control over how and when you receive support. We can support you to achieve your goals, such as becoming an active member of your local community.

Our flexible support is tailored to your needs, whether you’re looking for a few hours a week or more. Together, we co-create personalised support plans focusing on your interests, priorities and skills.

Whatever your needs are, we’re here to help. The type of support you receive is controlled by you. From help with personal care needs and managing finances, to finding education, work or leisure activities – you decide!

What types of supported living are there?

There are a variety of different types of supported living we can offer and we’ll strive to find the best option for you.

You could choose to live independently in your own flat with as much or as little support as you need. This could be in one of our already established properties, or we can work with you and our housing partners to source a property that meets your needs.

We can help connect you to other people who might want to live independently too but aren’t yet ready to live alone. You will have your own space but benefit from socialising with other like-minded people, sharing the communal spaces and sharing the costs of household bills.

You may be looking for the best of both worlds. Your own modern apartment with some shared communal space so you can choose when and if you want to socialise. We have worked with our housing partners to develop this popular type of accommodation.

Stepping-stone accommodation

This provides stability whilst you are between long-term support solutions. This type of support will help you plan for your future in a structured way. We will support you with the skills you may need to help you live more independently and, when you are ready, support you to move on.

Questions to ask when choosing a supported living home

A useful shortlist starts with the person, not just an available property. Write down what matters most to you and take these questions to a visit or assessment.

  • Location and daily life: Can you reach family, friends, shops, transport and the activities you enjoy? What help would you need to use them?
  • Your own space: Would you prefer your own flat or a shared home? Ask about privacy, shared areas, visitors, accessibility and any sensory needs.
  • Support arrangements: Which hours are staffed, and what happens overnight or in an emergency? Ask how individual support is agreed, reviewed and adjusted if your needs change.
  • Housing and costs: Who provides the accommodation, and what agreement would you sign? Ask for a clear breakdown of rent, household bills and support costs, including what any agreed funding covers.
  • Moving and settling in: Can you visit, meet the people involved and discuss a gradual transition? Ask who will coordinate the move and when the first review will take place.

Prepare your next step

You do not need to make every decision at once. An initial conversation can help identify the questions that need an assessment. Read about care needs assessments, explore funding supported living, and see our guide to moving to Moreways.

Availability, suitability and funding must be discussed for the individual placement. To start, send a referral enquiry with your own contact details. Please do not include confidential records or another person’s medical information in the initial form.
