Walking, running and moving
  • You could use a walking or running app to plan a route around your local area and gradually increase the distance at your own pace.
  • You could try the NHS Couch to 5K programme if you would like to begin running or gradually improve your fitness.
  • Simply walking a new route can also be an enjoyable way to stay active and explore your local area.
  • Choose safe and suitable routes, wear comfortable footwear and take breaks whenever you need them.
Pilates and yoga
  • Pilates and yoga can support strength, balance, flexibility and relaxation.
  • There are many beginner-friendly sessions available online that you can follow from home.
  • Start with gentle movements, follow the instructions carefully and always exercise at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
  • Stop if you feel pain, dizziness or significant discomfort. Speak to a healthcare professional if you are unsure whether an activity is suitable for you.
Bodyweight exercises
  • Bodyweight exercises use your own body rather than gym equipment and can often be completed at home.
  • Examples include supported squats, wall push-ups, seated leg raises and gentle step-ups.
  • Begin with a small number of repetitions and increase them gradually as your strength and confidence improve.
  • Do not worry if you cannot complete every exercise. Move at your own pace and take breaks whenever needed.
  • Use a stable chair, wall or handrail for support where appropriate.
Resistance bands

Resistance bands can add a gentle challenge to your exercise routine and may help improve strength, movement and flexibility.

Begin with a light resistance band and make sure it is in good condition before using it. Keep your movements slow and controlled and avoid stretching the band towards your face.

Ask your Support Worker or a healthcare professional for guidance if you are unsure which exercises are suitable for you.
