Ideas for everyday support

A reflection on the anxiety focus of 2023, with practical ways to make everyday support clearer, steadier and easier to approach.

The appointment is tomorrow, but it has already taken over today. Someone may be rehearsing what to say, worrying about the journey or trying to decide whether to cancel. The timetable tells only a small part of the story.

Mental Health Awareness Week in 2023 focused on anxiety. For people providing everyday support, that theme offers a useful question: what could make the next step feel more understandable and manageable for this particular person?

Ask what is difficult about the situation

Anxiety can have different triggers and experiences. Start with the person’s account, rather than assuming that the difficult part is the activity itself. The uncertainty around an appointment, a crowded waiting room or the possibility of being misunderstood may matter as much as what happens in the room.

A specific question can open a more useful conversation than repeated reassurance. Ask which part of tomorrow feels hardest, and whether the person would like to work through it together. Give space for them to say that they do not yet know.

Turn uncertainty into useful information

Where information can be checked, check it. Confirm the location, the person to ask for, the expected sequence and the arrangements for getting home. Explain what remains uncertain, such as a waiting time that cannot be guaranteed.

Write or present the plan in an agreed format. A short sequence may be more helpful than a detailed document. Let the person decide how often they want to revisit it; preparation should not become another demand they have to manage.

Agree support before the difficult moment

Talk about the kind of help the person wants if they feel overwhelmed. They may prefer fewer questions, a quieter space, a familiar person or time to pause. Those preferences should be practical enough for another member of the team to understand.

A support plan should also identify appropriate routes for professional help when concerns affect health or everyday functioning. The Mental Health Foundation’s anxiety resources describe anxiety as something that may need further support when it becomes difficult to manage. Everyday assistance should connect with that help, rather than act as a substitute for assessment or treatment.

Review the experience without making it a test

Afterwards, ask what helped and what made the situation harder. The person may have attended but felt unheard, or chosen to postpone after making a sensible plan. A simple success-or-failure judgement can miss the information needed for next time.

  • Was the information clear enough?
  • Did the agreed support happen?
  • What would the person like to repeat or change?
  • Is a different kind of help now needed?

Carry forward what was learned

The lasting value of the 2023 conversation is the attention it gives to a person’s experience. Clear information, a dependable response and a review led by the individual can make an ordinary day feel less uncertain.
