Health Care Assistant

Join the team at Moreways Healthcare and support adults to maintain their wellbeing, develop everyday skills and live as independently as possible within their own supported living environment.

Location St Peter’s House, Finchley
Service Specialist supported living
Focus Mental health, wellbeing, recovery and independence

About the role

Moreways Healthcare is looking for a motivated and compassionate Health Care Assistant to join our supported living team at St Peter’s House in Finchley.

St Peter’s House supports adults who may have mental health needs, complex histories or require structured assistance to maintain stability and develop greater independence within the community.

Your role will be to provide practical, emotional and recovery-focused support in accordance with each person’s individual support plan.

You may help individuals maintain routines, attend appointments, manage aspects of everyday living, engage with community activities, improve confidence and recognise changes in their own wellbeing.

This is not an institutional healthcare role. You will be working within a supported living environment where the people we support have their own homes, choices, rights and individual routines.

Support

Provide reliable, respectful and individualised support based on assessed needs and agreed outcomes.

Enable

Encourage people to develop skills and complete tasks for themselves wherever possible.

Observe

Recognise meaningful changes in mental health, physical wellbeing, behaviour or engagement.

Connect

Support access to community life, healthcare, meaningful activity and professional services.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide person-centred support in accordance with individual support plans and agreed outcomes.
  • Build respectful and professionally boundaried relationships with the people living at St Peter’s House.
  • Support individuals to develop and maintain daily routines that promote stability and independence.
  • Encourage people to undertake practical daily living activities for themselves wherever possible.
  • Support meal planning, shopping and food preparation where this forms part of an individual’s support arrangement.
  • Support attendance at healthcare, mental health and other professional appointments where agreed.
  • Encourage meaningful community participation, social activities and opportunities that reduce isolation.
  • Recognise changes in mood, behaviour, physical wellbeing or mental state and report concerns appropriately.
  • Support medication processes where authorised and only after relevant training and competency assessment.
  • Follow individual risk assessments, relapse-prevention plans and agreed support strategies.
  • Use agreed de-escalation or Positive Behaviour Support approaches where relevant.
  • Respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns, incidents and emergencies.
  • Maintain accurate, factual and timely support records.
  • Participate in effective shift handovers and communicate relevant information to colleagues.
  • Respect residents’ privacy, dignity, personal space and tenancy rights.
  • Work constructively with colleagues, Service Managers and external professionals.
  • Complete mandatory training and maintain required competencies.
  • Promote choice, autonomy and positive risk-taking within agreed support arrangements.

An important point about supported living

Moreways Healthcare’s supported living services are designed to help people maintain their own homes and live as independently as possible.

The role is therefore different from working within a nursing home or traditional residential-care setting.

Support should be enabling rather than task-driven. If somebody is able to prepare part of their own meal, organise their own belongings, make a telephone call or complete another everyday task, staff should support that independence rather than automatically taking over.

Any health-related or medication support must remain within the boundaries of the individual’s commissioned support package, organisational procedures and the worker’s training and competence.

Supporting independence in everyday life

01

Understand

Know what the individual can already do, where support is needed and what outcomes they want to achieve.

02

Support

Provide the right amount of assistance without doing more than is necessary.

03

Build

Develop skills, confidence, routines and self-management through repeated everyday practice.

04

Progress

Help the person take increasing responsibility as their capability and confidence grow.

Areas you may support

Daily routines and independent living skills.
Shopping, meal planning and food preparation.
Maintaining the person’s home and household routines.
Community access and meaningful activities.
Healthcare and mental health appointment engagement.
Medication support where formally authorised and within competency.
Building confidence, social inclusion and community connections.
Recognising deterioration and following agreed escalation arrangements.

Supporting mental health and recovery

Individuals may experience periods in which their mental health is less stable. Frontline staff can play an important role in recognising early changes and supporting agreed recovery strategies.

Changes in sleep, routine, social engagement, mood, self-care, appetite or behaviour may sometimes be relevant to the person’s mental health.

You are not expected to diagnose or provide clinical treatment. Your responsibility is to know the person’s agreed plan, observe relevant changes, record them accurately and escalate concerns appropriately.

You should also encourage individuals to use the coping and relapse-prevention strategies that have been developed with them and their professional team.

Complex and forensic support

Some individuals supported by Moreways Healthcare may have complex or forensic histories and require structured risk-management arrangements.

Depending on the person, arrangements may include Section 37/41 conditional discharge, Section 117 aftercare, MAPPA involvement or forensic community-team support.

Staff must follow the specific arrangements applicable to the individual without introducing unnecessary additional restrictions.

Relevant changes, concerns or possible breaches of agreed arrangements must be recorded and escalated through the appropriate channels.

Working at St Peter’s House

St Peter’s House is one of Moreways Healthcare’s supported living services in Finchley.

You will work as part of a team providing structured support throughout the day and evening, alongside waking-night provision.

Good teamwork is essential. Staff should provide consistent support across shifts, communicate significant information clearly and avoid creating different expectations depending on who is working.

You will also be expected to contribute to a calm, respectful environment in which residents are supported as adults living within their own home.

What we are looking for

Compassion You treat people with respect and patience without becoming patronising or taking over unnecessarily.
Reliability You understand that continuity matters and can be depended upon to attend shifts and complete agreed responsibilities.
Observation You notice changes in wellbeing, behaviour or presentation and communicate concerns appropriately.
Communication You can communicate clearly with residents, colleagues and professionals and produce appropriate written records.
Professional boundaries You can build positive relationships while maintaining confidentiality and appropriate boundaries.
Enabling approach You understand that good support is about helping people develop capability rather than doing everything for them.

Experience and training

Previous experience within supported living, mental health, learning disability, autism or another health and social care environment would be advantageous, but applicants with the right values and transferable skills may also be considered.

A relevant Health and Social Care qualification is welcomed but is not necessarily required for entry into the role.

You must have sufficient written and digital skills to complete electronic support records and communicate relevant information accurately.

Moreways Healthcare will provide an induction and mandatory training programme. Additional service-specific training will be provided according to the needs of the people you support.

No worker should undertake a task requiring specific competency until the relevant training and competency assessment has been completed.

Why join Moreways Healthcare?

  • Work within a specialist supported living environment focused on independence and community life.
  • Support adults with mental health, complex, learning disability, autism and forensic needs.
  • Receive structured induction and relevant training for your role.
  • Develop practical experience in recovery-focused support, professional recording and positive risk management.
  • Work alongside experienced Support Workers, Recovery Workers and Service Managers.
  • Develop towards Senior Support Worker, Recovery Worker, Forensic Recovery Worker or leadership positions as your competence and experience grow.

Safeguarding and safer recruitment

Moreways Healthcare is committed to safeguarding adults who use our services and expects all employees to share that responsibility.

Appointment will be subject to the appropriate pre-employment checks for the role, which may include an Enhanced DBS check, employment history, references, identity and right-to-work verification and other safer-recruitment requirements.

We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from people from a wide range of backgrounds who meet the requirements of the role.

What good support looks like

Good support is not measured by how many tasks staff complete for somebody.

It is measured by whether the person feels safe and respected, whether their choices are heard, whether risks are managed proportionately and whether they are developing the confidence and skills to manage more of their own life.

Some progress may be small and gradual. Consistent everyday support can nevertheless make a significant difference to stability, confidence and long-term independence.

Could you help someone build greater independence one day at a time?

If you are compassionate, reliable and interested in supporting adults with mental health and complex needs within a specialist supported living environment, we would welcome your application to join Moreways Healthcare as a Health Care Assistant.
