Healthcare Support Worker – Level 2 Apprenticeship

Start your career in health and social care while supporting people to live safely, confidently and as independently as possible.

Healthcare Support Workers are a vital part of our frontline teams at Moreways Healthcare. In this role, you will provide practical, compassionate and person-centred support to adults with a range of needs, while developing the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours required for a long-term career in health and social care.

This Level 2 apprenticeship is particularly suitable for people who are new to care or who have some early experience and want to build a strong professional foundation while working towards a recognised qualification.

What the role involves

At Moreways Healthcare, you may work within supported living homes, outreach services or community-based placements. You will help people with their daily routines, wellbeing, independence and personal goals in accordance with their support plans.

Your responsibilities will vary depending on the person you are supporting and the service in which you are based, but may include:

  • Supporting people with daily living tasks and household routines.
  • Helping individuals attend appointments, activities and community opportunities.
  • Promoting independence, confidence and informed choice.
  • Supporting people to maintain routines around eating, drinking and general wellbeing.
  • Providing personal care where this forms part of the agreed support package and you are trained and authorised to do so.
  • Observing changes in a person’s wellbeing, behaviour or presentation and reporting concerns promptly.
  • Supporting medication processes where this falls within your role, training and competence.
  • Helping maintain safe, respectful and comfortable living environments.
  • Completing clear and accurate daily records.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues, families and professionals involved in the person’s support.

Who you may support

Moreways Healthcare supports adults with a broad range of needs. Depending on your placement, you may work with people who have:

  • Mental health needs
  • Learning disabilities
  • Autism
  • Complex emotional or behavioural needs
  • Dual diagnosis and co-occurring needs
  • Forensic histories and step-down support needs
  • Needs relating to community reintegration
  • Support requirements around independent living and tenancy skills

Working as part of the team

You will work as part of a wider support team and will be expected to follow agreed ways of working, support plans, risk management arrangements and organisational procedures.

You will receive supervision and guidance from more experienced colleagues and managers, and you will be expected to ask for help whenever a situation falls outside your competence or training.

Good communication is essential. You will need to share relevant information during handovers, record important changes and work professionally with other people involved in the individual’s care and support.

What you will learn

  • Person-centred care and support
  • Communication and professional relationships
  • Safeguarding and duty of care
  • Health, safety and infection prevention
  • Supporting dignity, privacy and choice
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion
  • Recognising and reporting changes in wellbeing
  • Accurate record keeping
  • Supporting independence
  • Professional boundaries and confidentiality
  • Working effectively within a care team
  • Understanding your role, responsibilities and limits of competence

Care Certificate and induction

As part of your induction and development, you will be supported to complete or demonstrate the standards required by the Care Certificate where applicable.

You will also complete Moreways Healthcare’s mandatory training programme and any additional service-specific training relevant to the people you support.

Programme duration

The apprenticeship will typically take approximately 15–18 months to complete, depending on your individual progress and the programme agreed with the apprenticeship provider.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a genuine interest in health and social care, a respectful and compassionate approach and a willingness to learn.

English and maths requirements will depend on the apprenticeship provider and the relevant apprenticeship standard. Where required, apprentices may complete Functional Skills alongside the programme before progressing to the end-point assessment.

Previous care experience can be helpful but is not always essential. More important is your ability to communicate well, work responsibly and treat people with dignity and respect.

Professional standards

All Healthcare Support Workers are expected to work in accordance with Moreways Healthcare policies and procedures, safeguarding requirements and the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers and Adult Social Care Workers in England.

You must always work within the limits of your role and competence, follow agreed support plans and report concerns appropriately.

Why start your career with Moreways Healthcare?

  • Gain practical experience in specialist supported living and community services.
  • Develop your confidence with support from experienced colleagues and managers.
  • Work with people who have varied and complex support needs.
  • Learn how to promote independence rather than create dependency.

  • Build a foundation for progression into more senior support, specialist or leadership roles.

Next steps

Successful completion of the Level 2 apprenticeship can provide a strong foundation for progression into more experienced support roles and further professional development.
