Healthcare Support Worker (Senior) – Level 3 Standard

What the role involves

As a Senior Healthcare Support Worker at Moreways Healthcare, you may support people living in our supported living homes, outreach services or community-based placements. Depending on the service and the individual, this may include people with mental health needs, learning disabilities, autism, complex emotional needs, forensic histories or people progressing through a step-down pathway towards greater independence.

You will work within agreed support plans, risk management arrangements and organisational procedures, while using your experience and professional judgement to respond appropriately to changing circumstances.

• Support people with daily living, routines, appointments and community activities.
• Promote independence, confidence, choice and meaningful participation.
• Support individuals to work towards agreed personal outcomes and recovery goals.
• Recognise changes in presentation, wellbeing or behaviour and escalate concerns appropriately.
• Contribute to support planning, reviews, risk assessments and accurate record keeping.
• Work constructively with families, social workers, community mental health teams and other professionals.
• Support medication processes where this falls within your role, training and competence.
• Contribute to positive behaviour support and proactive approaches to reducing distress and risk.
• Assist with transitions, placement reviews and moves towards greater independence where appropriate.
• Help maintain a safe, respectful and well-organised living environment.

A senior role within the team

This is more than an entry-level support position. Senior Healthcare Support Workers are expected to demonstrate good practice, communicate effectively and act as positive role models within the staff team.

Depending on experience and the requirements of the service, you may support less experienced colleagues, contribute to handovers, assist with induction and help ensure that agreed standards are consistently maintained across the shift.

You will always work within the boundaries of your competence and in accordance with Moreways Healthcare policies, safeguarding requirements and relevant professional standards.

Where you could work

Moreways Healthcare provides support across a range of supported living and community settings. You may work within one of our staffed homes, individual flats, outreach placements or other community-based services.

Our approach is centred on providing the right level of support without creating unnecessary dependency. Staff are expected to balance safety and risk management with the person’s right to make choices, develop skills and progress towards greater independence.

Programme duration

The apprenticeship will typically take approximately 18–24 months to complete, depending on prior experience, progress and the training programme agreed with the apprenticeship provider.

Entry requirements

Applicants should normally have previous experience in a health, social care or support environment and be able to demonstrate a commitment to delivering safe, respectful and person-centred support.

English and maths requirements will depend on the apprenticeship standard and individual training provider. Where required, apprentices may need to complete Functional Skills alongside the programme before progressing to the end-point assessment.

Applicants must also be willing to complete all mandatory Moreways Healthcare training and any additional learning required for the service in which they are placed.

Care Certificate and professional standards

Where applicable, apprentices will complete or demonstrate achievement of the Care Certificate standards as part of their induction and development.

All staff are expected to work in accordance with the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers and Adult Social Care Workers and to uphold Moreways Healthcare’s expectations relating to dignity, safeguarding, confidentiality, professional boundaries and respectful practice.

Career progression

Successful completion of the apprenticeship can support progression into more senior operational or clinical-support roles. Depending on your experience, qualifications and career goals, future opportunities may include senior support roles, team leadership, management development or progression towards further professional study.

For some apprentices, this qualification may also provide a useful foundation for progression towards roles such as Assistant Practitioner, Nursing Associate or other regulated health and social care professions, subject to the relevant entry requirements.
