Bank / Relief Workers
Join Moreways Healthcare’s flexible staffing team and provide high-quality support across our supported living and community services when additional cover is needed.
About the role
Moreways Healthcare is looking for reliable and adaptable Bank / Relief Workers who can provide additional staffing support across our supported living and community services.
Bank staff are an important part of maintaining safe, consistent services when permanent colleagues are unavailable, staffing requirements temporarily increase or additional support is required.
Depending on your experience, training and the needs of the service, you may support adults with mental health needs, learning disabilities, autism, complex emotional needs, dual diagnosis, forensic histories or other complex support requirements.
Because you may work across different services, you will need to adapt quickly while still following the individual support plans, risk-management arrangements and working practices of the service in which you are deployed.
Flexible
Work across different services and shift types according to operational need and your availability.
Reliable
Be somebody teams can depend upon when cover is needed, including evenings, nights and weekends.
Consistent
Follow established support plans and service procedures even when the environment is unfamiliar.
Person-Centred
Adapt to each person rather than assuming that the same approach will work across different placements.
Key responsibilities
- Provide safe, respectful and person-centred support during allocated bank or relief shifts.
- Read and follow relevant support plans, risk assessments and service instructions before undertaking support.
- Support people with agreed daily living activities and practical routines.
- Promote independence rather than automatically completing tasks on behalf of individuals.
- Support community activities, appointments and meaningful engagement where required.
- Recognise changes in wellbeing, mental state, behaviour or presentation and escalate concerns appropriately.
- Support medication processes where this forms part of the role and you are trained and assessed as competent.
- Follow Positive Behaviour Support or agreed de-escalation strategies where relevant.
- Respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns, incidents or emergencies.
- Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- Complete accurate, factual and timely support notes for every shift.
- Participate in handovers and communicate relevant information to permanent staff and managers.
- Respect the fact that supported living properties are people’s homes.
- Follow health and safety, fire, infection-prevention and service-specific procedures.
- Work constructively with permanent staff rather than operating separately from the established team.
- Seek guidance promptly when asked to undertake something outside your competence or when information is unclear.
Flexible shift opportunities
Bank and relief work can provide greater flexibility than a fixed rota while giving you experience across different Moreways Healthcare services.
08:00–14:00
Morning and daytime support including routines, appointments, activities and practical daily living.
14:00–22:00
Afternoon and evening support, community activity, meals, routines and preparation for the night.
22:00–08:00
Waking-night support where allocated, requiring staff to remain awake and attentive throughout the shift.
Shift availability will vary according to staffing needs. Bank status does not guarantee a fixed number of hours, and you should only accept shifts that you are able to attend reliably.
Flexibility does not mean reduced standards
Bank workers may be working in a service less frequently than permanent staff, but the same expectations around safeguarding, professional boundaries, recording, confidentiality and respectful practice still apply.
You must familiarise yourself with the relevant information before supporting an individual. You should never assume that something is safe or appropriate simply because it was acceptable in another service.
If you do not understand a support plan, medication arrangement, restriction or risk-management measure, ask the shift lead or manager before acting.
Who you may support
Forensic and complex support
Some Moreways Healthcare services support individuals with forensic histories or complex risk profiles.
Depending on the person, arrangements may include Section 37/41 conditional discharge, Section 117 aftercare, MAPPA involvement, forensic community-team input or other professionally agreed restrictions.
If deployed to one of these services, you must understand the relevant support and risk-management arrangements before beginning direct support.
Bank staff should never alter restrictions, make clinical decisions or depart from an agreed plan without appropriate authority. Significant information must be documented and escalated to the relevant manager or professional.
Working across different services
One of the advantages of bank work is the opportunity to build experience across different environments and client groups.
It also requires adaptability. One service may primarily support people with mental health needs, while another may involve autism, learning disability, forensic step-down or outreach support.
You should therefore arrive prepared to listen, read the relevant information and understand how that particular service operates rather than expecting every shift to be identical.
What we are looking for
Experience, qualifications and training
Previous experience within supported living, mental health, learning disability, autism, forensic services, outreach or another social care setting would be advantageous.
A relevant Health and Social Care qualification is welcomed but is not necessarily required for every bank opportunity. We will also consider relevant experience, values and ability to work safely within the role.
You should have appropriate literacy and digital skills to use electronic records, complete support notes and communicate professionally.
Before undertaking duties requiring specific competency — such as medication support — you must have completed the relevant training and competency assessment.
Bank workers are also expected to keep mandatory training current and complete service-specific induction where required.
Why join the Moreways Healthcare bank team?
- Choose from available shifts that fit around other commitments.
- Gain experience across specialist supported living and community services.
- Work with adults with mental health, learning disability, autism, complex and forensic needs.
- Develop practical experience in person-centred support, recovery and positive risk management.
- Build familiarity with different services and client groups across the organisation.
- Create a pathway towards permanent Support Worker, Recovery Worker, Senior Support Worker or other roles where suitable opportunities arise.
What good bank support looks like
A good bank worker does not simply arrive, complete a shift and leave. They quickly understand what is expected, communicate with the permanent team, follow the person’s plan and leave accurate information for colleagues.
They bring flexibility without inconsistency and are able to join an established team without disrupting the relationships and routines that matter to the people living in the service.
If you are reliable, adaptable and committed to delivering respectful, person-centred support, we would welcome your application to join the Moreways Healthcare Bank / Relief team.
