Recovery-Focused Supported Living

Night Recovery Worker

Support adults with complex mental health and associated needs through the night, combining recovery-focused engagement, strong risk awareness and consistent waking-night support within Moreways Healthcare’s supported living services.

Approach Recovery, independence and positive risk management
Service Model Specialist supported living and step-down support

About the role

Moreways Healthcare supports adults with mental health needs, learning disabilities, autism, complex emotional needs and other conditions that may require structured or intensive support. We also provide supported living for individuals progressing through forensic and step-down pathways towards greater independence in the community.

As a Night Recovery Worker, your role goes beyond maintaining overnight safety. You will help people preserve the progress they are making towards recovery, develop healthier routines, manage periods of distress and remain engaged with the plans that support their longer-term independence.

Some individuals may have experienced repeated hospital admissions, periods in secure environments, substance misuse, behavioural escalation or previous offending. Others may be subject to Section 37/41 conditional discharge, Section 117 aftercare, MAPPA arrangements or other professionally agreed risk-management measures.

You will work within individual support plans and risk assessments, using a calm, consistent and least-restrictive approach while recognising when changes in presentation require escalation.

Recovery

Help individuals maintain routines, use coping strategies and continue working towards recovery and independence even when difficulties arise overnight.

Risk Awareness

Recognise meaningful changes in mental state, behaviour or wellbeing and follow agreed escalation and risk-management arrangements.

Consistency

Provide predictable, respectful support and ensure significant overnight information is accurately communicated to the wider team.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide active waking-night support in accordance with the established 22:00–08:00 night shift.
  • Deliver person-centred and recovery-focused support in accordance with individual plans and agreed outcomes.
  • Support residents to develop or maintain healthier night-time and sleep routines where this forms part of their plan.
  • Respond calmly and appropriately when an individual is anxious, distressed, unsettled or experiencing deterioration in their mental health.
  • Recognise potential relapse indicators and other meaningful changes in presentation.
  • Follow individual risk assessments, relapse-prevention arrangements and crisis or contingency plans.
  • Support individuals to use agreed coping strategies rather than creating unnecessary dependency.
  • Complete agreed observations or welfare checks where these form part of the individual’s assessed needs.
  • Support medication processes where authorised, trained and assessed as competent.
  • Respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns, incidents, emergencies or unexpected events.
  • Maintain accurate, factual and contemporaneous support records.
  • Provide detailed and relevant handovers to incoming staff.
  • Maintain the safety and security of the supported living environment while respecting residents’ privacy and tenancy rights.
  • Liaise with the on-call manager or other professionals where escalation is required.

Recovery does not stop overnight

Recovery-focused support is not confined to daytime appointments or formal reviews. The way someone manages difficult periods at night can have a significant effect on their confidence, stability and ability to manage the following day.

A Night Recovery Worker should therefore understand the person’s wider goals rather than viewing the shift as a series of checks. Where appropriate, you will encourage individuals to make use of their own strategies, recognise triggers, regulate emotions and maintain routines that support their wellbeing.

1

Recognise

Notice changes in mood, sleep, engagement, behaviour or presentation.

2

Engage

Use calm, respectful communication and agreed recovery strategies.

3

Respond

Take proportionate action in accordance with the support and risk plan.

4

Communicate

Record and hand over relevant information so support remains consistent.

Forensic and complex risk management

Some people supported by Moreways Healthcare have forensic histories or are progressing from secure or inpatient settings into community living. Their support may include specific requirements relating to community access, relationships, substances, medication, contact, appointments or other identified risks.

Overnight staff play an important role in maintaining these arrangements consistently. You may need to consider risks associated with deterioration in mental health, substance misuse, vulnerability, exploitation, self-neglect, missing-person concerns, behavioural escalation or offending-related factors.

The role is not to make clinical or legal decisions outside your remit. It is to understand the agreed plan, recognise significant information, respond within your competence and escalate concerns appropriately.

Who you may support

Adults with severe or enduring mental health needs who require structured support to maintain stability in the community.
People progressing from hospital or more restrictive environments through a step-down pathway.
Individuals with forensic histories, including people subject to conditional discharge or multi-agency risk-management arrangements.
People with learning disabilities, autism or differing communication and sensory needs.
Individuals with complex emotional needs or difficulties with emotional regulation.
People with dual diagnosis or co-occurring substance misuse and mental health needs.

Supporting community reintegration

Moreways Healthcare’s supported living model is intended to help people build sustainable lives in the community rather than remain indefinitely dependent on high levels of support.

Even during a night shift, your work contributes to this progression. Stable routines, improved self-management, appropriate use of support and successful management of periods of distress can all strengthen a person’s ability to move towards greater independence.

Staff should therefore balance appropriate safeguards with autonomy, choice and positive risk-taking, avoiding unnecessarily restrictive practice.

Working with the wider professional network

Depending on the person you support, Moreways Healthcare may work alongside social workers, care coordinators, community mental health teams, forensic community teams, psychiatrists, psychologists, commissioners, probation practitioners and other agencies.

Night staff may identify information that becomes important to those professionals. Accurate documentation, appropriate escalation and effective handover are therefore central responsibilities of the role.

What we are looking for

Recovery-focused thinking You understand that support should help people build capability and confidence rather than simply manage behaviour.
Professional curiosity You notice changes, ask appropriate questions and do not ignore information that may be relevant to wellbeing or risk.
Emotional resilience You can remain calm and professional when supporting somebody through distress, deterioration or challenging behaviour.
Risk awareness You understand the importance of following detailed support plans, risk assessments and escalation procedures.
Communication You can write factual records and provide clear handovers that distinguish observation from assumption.
Respect for autonomy You understand that supported living is the person’s home and that safety must be balanced with dignity, rights and independence.

Experience and knowledge

Previous experience supporting adults with mental health needs, forensic histories, learning disabilities, autism, complex needs or substance misuse is desirable. Experience within supported living, community mental health, forensic services or another recovery-focused environment would be particularly relevant.

We are interested not only in how long you have worked in care, but in how you think and practise. You should be able to demonstrate professional boundaries, sound judgement, good communication and a genuine belief that people can progress towards greater independence.

You will be expected to complete Moreways Healthcare’s mandatory induction and training programme together with any additional training required for the service and individuals you support.

Why join Moreways Healthcare?

  • Work within specialist supported living rather than an institutional care environment.
  • Develop experience supporting adults with complex mental health and forensic needs.
  • Build practical expertise in recovery-focused practice, relapse prevention and positive risk management.
  • Gain experience of step-down support and community reintegration.
  • Work within services that collaborate with social care, mental health and forensic professionals.
  • Develop towards roles such as Senior Recovery Worker, Senior Support Worker, Lead Support Worker or service leadership positions.

What good night recovery support looks like

Good night support combines safety with purpose. It means recognising deterioration early, responding proportionately, helping people use their own recovery strategies and avoiding unnecessary restrictions.

It also means ensuring that anything significant that happens overnight is understood by the wider team so that support remains coordinated, consistent and focused on the person’s longer-term outcomes.

Could you help someone maintain their recovery when the day team has gone home?

If you are observant, resilient, compassionate and confident working with complex mental health needs while promoting independence, we would welcome your application to join Moreways Healthcare as a Night Recovery Worker.
